Abstract

It has been 50 years since the concept of learned helplessness was recognized as an important phenomenon associated to learning in experimental environments (Seligman & Maier, 1967). A great deal of studies on both animals and humans have been carried out to contribute with a reformulation of the theory and to offer empirical evidence of its correlations in depression and anxiety among many other forms of psychopathology and social issues. ?is paper offers a revision of studies where learned helplessness and hopelessness have been looked at from different perspectives and their implications to different approaches in psychopathology and other issues of social concern
